Step Softly into the New Year
The words and poem that inspire this reflection come from Native Intellect. May they guide us as we approach the future with both hope and faith. Elder Osterhoudt shared the link on her Facebook page, and I was immediately drawn in by the quiet beauty of the images and the wisdom held in the words.
Each year, I find myself seeking guidance for crossing the threshold into a new beginning. Stepping boldly into the unknown often carries a measure of trepidation, yet it is accompanied by the deep excitement of release—of letting go, beginning again, and trusting what has not yet been written. The pages before us are blank, and while not everything rests in our control, we are not without agency. We are invited to ask: What will we do better? What will we do differently? How will we show up with greater intention and care?
As you set your intentions for the year ahead—whether softly or boldly—remember this: you do not walk alone. You are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, cheering you on, holding you in prayer, and reminding you that every step forward, no matter how small, is sacred. Step gently into the new year, trusting that you are accompanied, guided, and deeply loved.
Where the Stars Walk With Us
Step softly,
the earth listens.
Look upward,
the old lights
remember your name.
Do not hurry.
The path is long,
but it was placed here
with care.
Those who came before
still move beside you—
in the sway of your breath,
in the patience of your stride.
Let the night teach you:
strength is quiet,
kindness is steady,
and every small step
can carry a whole lineage.
When you feel alone,
lift your eyes.
If the stars are moving,
so are you.
