A Christmas Message: Reimagining the Church in the World
At Christmas, we celebrate the holy mystery of God choosing to enter the world—not with force or certainty, but through vulnerability, love, and presence. The birth of Jesus reminds us that God meets us where we are and invites us into something new. From a humble manger, God reimagines what power, purpose, and hope look like in the world.
As we celebrate this season, the Synod of the Northeast does so with renewed clarity and commitment. Our vision—Reimagining the Church in the World—and our proclamation —Spirit-led, Transformative Faith, and Boundless Welcome—call us to live the Christmas story beyond December 25 and into every place where God’s people gather and serve.
To be Spirit-led is to trust that God is still moving among us, guiding our discernment, shaping our leadership, and calling us forward even when the way is unfamiliar. Like the shepherds who followed the angels’ song, we listen and respond with faith.
To live a transformative faith is to allow the love of Christ to change us—and through us, the world. The incarnation proclaims that God does not stand at a distance but enters fully into human life, bringing healing, justice, and renewal wherever Christ is made known.
To embody boundless welcome is to remember that the Christ child came for all. In a world longing for belonging, the Church is called to be a place—and a people—where doors are open, dignity is honored, and every person is seen as made in the image of God.
This Christmas, may we remember that the Church is not confined to buildings or traditions alone. The Church is alive wherever Christ’s light shines through Spirit-led leadership, transformative mission, and communities of radical hospitality.
May the light of Christ fill your hearts and homes with hope. And may this holy season strengthen our resolve to walk together—reimagining the Church in the world, united in Christ, and faithful to God’s call.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
