A New Way Forward is a foundational document in the current day life of the Synod of the Northeast.
This document is the result of a two-year process of praying, discerning and finally planning for the future of the Synod. This process was completed in 2013. Since then we have been living the document through significant shifts in structure, governance and mission priorities. We highly recommend that this document be read for anyone involved in Synod life.

The Synod of the Northeast—a working definition
We understand our Synod as a regional community of PCUSA presbyteries and their congregations committed to serving as supportive mutual partners. It is the responsibility of this regional community to walk alongside its presbyteries, offering the kinds of resourcing presbyteries are unable to provide alone. The Synod exists to serve its presbyteries through resourcing, guidance and the ability to gather partners on a larger scale. Drawing upon its regional size and diversity, the Synod provides valuable resources and opportunities for its presbyteries. The Synod also provides creative and less encumbered space for innovation. With governance simplified and without the intense relational and governance demands faced by most presbyteries, the Synod can be a place where creativity might be allowed to flourish.
The Missional Purpose of the Synod of the Northeast
This is the vision God has placed in our hearts, that together we will become witnesses to the ever-expanding community of Christ, following his way: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35) We are a regional community of presbyteries and congregations learning to respond to God’s call to become agents of divine justice, transforming the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in the Northeast into a community of hospitality and welcome for all. We recognize that we have not always lived into the gift of our great diversity. We have not always fully welcomed all those within the communities we serve, including people of different racial or ethnic identities, economic classes, genders, abilities, sexualities, immigration statuses, or those who are marginalized in other ways. Finding deep joy in our differences, we commit to equipping the saints for a courageous and steadfast witness of love and hope; learning, growing, worshiping and working together.
Una Breve Descripción de Un Nuevo Camino El Sínodo del Noreste—una definición en proceso
Nosotros entendemos que nuestro Sínodo es una comunidad regional de presbiterios y congregaciones de la Iglesia Presbiteriana (EE.UU.A.) comprometidos con servir como colaboradore/as en mutuo apoyo. Es la responsabilidad de esta comunidad regional el caminar mano a mano con sus presbiterios, ofreciéndoles los tipos de recursos que por si solos no pueden ofrecer. El Sínodo existe para servir a sus presbiterios proveyendo recursos, orientación, y la habilidad de convocar colaboradores a mayor escala. Dado su tamaño geográfico y diversidad, el Sínodo provee oportunidades y recursos valiosos a sus presbiterios. De la misma manera, el Sínodo provee un espacio creativo y amplio para la innovación. Con una estructura de gobierno simplificada, y no teniendo las intensas demandas relacionales y de gobierno de muchos de nuestros presbiterios, el Sínodo pudiera ser el espacio donde se permitiera el crecimiento de creatividad.
El Propósito Misional del Sínodo del Noreste
Esta es la visión que Dios ha puesto en nuestros corazones, el que junta/os nos convirtamos testigos de la amplia y creciente comunidad de Cristo, siguiendo sus pasos: “Un mandamiento nuevo les doy: Que se amen unos a otros. Así como yo los he amado, ámense también ustedes unos a otros. En esto conocerán todos que ustedes son mis discípulos, si se aman unos a otros.” (Juan 13:34-35, RVC) Somos una comunidad regional de presbiterios y congregaciones aprendiendo a responder al llamado de Dios a ser agentes de justicia divina, transformando así a la Iglesia Presbiteriana (EE.UU.A.) en el Noreste en una comunidad de hospitalidad y acogida para todos. Reconocemos que no siempre hemos vivido este gran don de nuestra diversidad. No siempre hemos acogido completamente a todos aquello/as que están en las comunidades que servimos, incluyendo a personas de diversas identidades raciales y étnicas, clases sociales, géneros, habilidades, sexualidades, estatus migratorios, y aquello/as marginado/as en otras y distintas maneras. Al encontrar un gran regocijo en nuestras diferencias, nos comprometemos a preparar a la/os santo/as para un testimonio valiente y constante de amor y esperanza; aprendiendo, creciendo, adorando y trabajando junta/os.
동북대회 – 업무 정의(定義)
우리는 우리 대회가 서로 협력하고 지원하며 섬기는 미국장로교 노회들과 그에 속한 교
회들의 지역 공동체임을 이해한다. 노회가 그 혼자의 힘만으로는 제공할 수 없는 자원을
제공함으로써 노회와 함께 동행하는 것이 이 지역 공동체의 책임이다. 대회는 자원과 안
내와 그리고 더 큰 차원에서 협력을 이끌어 내는 능력을 통하여 속해있는 노회를 섬기기
위해 존재한다. 대회는 지역의 크기와 다양성을 이용하여 가치있는 자원과 기회를 그 산
하 노회들에게 제공한다. 대회는 또한 창조적이며 부담이 적은 공간을 개혁을 위해 노회
들에게 제공한다. 대부분의 노회가 직면하고 있는 단순화된 관리와 심화된 관계, 그리
고 관리요청에 대하여 대회는 번영을 이루는 창조성의 장소가 될 수 있다.
동북대회의 선교적 목적
이것은 하나님이 우리 마음에 두신 비전으로, 우리가 함께 항상 확장해가는 그리스도의
공동체를 향한 증인이 되어 그의 길을 따라가는 것이다: “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서
로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라너희가 서로 사랑하면 이
로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라” (요한복음 13:34-35)
우리는 하나님인 정의의 대리인이 되라는 하나님의 부르심에 응답하기를 배우며, 동북
부에 있는 미국장로교를 모든 사람을 위한 친절과 환영의 공동체로 변화시켜 나가는 노
회들과 교회들로 이루어진 지역공동체이다. 우리는 언제나 충분히 우리의 위대한 다양
성의 선물에 합당하게 살지 못했음을 인정한다. 우리는 소수인종과 경제 계층, 성별, 능
력, 성적(性的) 관심, 이민적 신분, 또는 기타 다른 방법으로 한계상황에 있는 사람들 등
을 포함하여 우리가 섬기는 공동체 내에서 모든 사람들을 언제나 충분히 환영하지 못했
다. 우리의 차이점 안에서 심오한 기쁨을 발견함으로써 우리는 용감하고 견고한 사랑과
희망의 증인이 되도록 성도를 온전케 하는 데에 전념한다; 배우며, 성장하며, 예배하며
함께 일하기.
