Emerging Leaders Gathering 2017

November 9-11, 2017
Thursday dinner - Saturday lunch
Silver Bay YMCA Conference & Family Retreat Center

The 2017 Emerging Leaders Gathering is framed by the four spiritual practices named in Acts 2:42:
The earliest believers "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers."

On November 9-11, 2017 at the Silver Bay YMCA Conference & Family Retreat Center, we will gather in worship, around tables, over food, and in the beauty of God's good Creation!

In addition to fun, fellowship, and sabbath, we will also delve into the tradition of our faith, examining three of the most recent confessional statements of the Church: the Brief Statement of Faith, the Confession of Belhar, and the Sarasota Statement. These statements speak to the pressing realities of our time, and so in discussions and small groups we will explore the themes they raise of the activity of the Holy Spirit, our calling to community, and the Church's call to address institutional imbalances of power.

"In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage"* and so we invite you to gather with us to pray, rest, and prepare for the work we are called to do in our unique contexts.

Registration is $100 per participant, but cost is never prohibitive. Please contact Amaury Tañón-Santos if you need assistance. The registration deadline is October 20, 2017.

Funding is heavily subsidized by the Synod for participants during the Gathering, but if you would like to bring your family and/or extend your stay at Silver Bay before or after the event, you are welcome to do so at your own expense. Contact Amaury for more details and to make arrangements.

Pre-Arrival Information

Arrival Logistics

We will be meeting at the Silver Bay YMCA Conference & Family Retreat Center on Lake George in upstate New York. The address is:  87 Silver Bay Road; Silver Bay, NY 12874

Cell service in the Lake George area can be spotty, so please be careful about relying on your phone for routing and navigation! Traditional GPS units do tend to be reliable.

Check-in will open at 1:00pm at the Silver Bay Inn (see the campus map).

Our first official activity is dinner at 5:30, but informal socializing and activities will begin at 4:00pm in the Inn Lounge. After you’ve settled in, please feel free to join us!

Fellow Participants

A list of participants and their basic information has been made available to event attendees by email on Thursday, November 2. If you are registered for the event but did not receive that email, please contact Margaret Mitsuyasu to obtain a copy of the list. For privacy purposes, only those registered for the event are eligible to receive this list, and information is included only for those who granted permission to do so during registration.

For those attending, please feel free to contact others in your area about carpooling or otherwise coordinating your travel arrangements. (Pro tip: Use the funnel button to the right of the printer icon to sort the list by category, a few options are already provided.)

Packing Considerations

Silver Bay is a beautiful campus, however it can be quite dark at night. You may want to bring a flashlight for the evenings. Our Friday evening social includes the possibility of a bonfire on the lakefront, and it may be particularly helpful to have a personal light source as we move to and from that location.

Additionally, Silver Bay provides linens and towels but not basic toiletries. Please be sure to bring your own.

Emergency Contact Information

As mentioned above, cell service in the Lake George region tends to be spotty, and this is true of the Silver Bay campus as well. They do have pretty good wifi connections though.

You may want to consider letting family members and other critical contacts know of the possibility that you might be out of cell range. For urgent matters, they may call the Silver Bay office at 518-543-8833 and the staff will be sure those messages reach you.

Please travel safely! We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Emerging Leaders

If you are or know of an emerging leader who might like to be involved, please contact our Mission Coordinator, Margaret Mitsuyasu. We’d love to hear from you!
