Advocacy Ministries Coordinator
I would like to thank the Fab 5 Presbytery Partnership Group for allowing me the opportunity to serve you as your Advocacy Ministries Coordinator. I am an ordained United Methodist clergy person, living with my husband and 4 year old son in Glens Falls, NY (near Lake George in the Adirondacks). I served as a pastor in various congregations for 15 years before taking family leave when our son got too big to sit through Finance Committee meetings with any measure of patience. Now that he is in school for part of each day, I embrace this opportunity to focus my time and attention on facilitating this important work among your five Presbyteries.
As I attended the PPG meeting in Oneonta on Saturday, March 29, I heard those present express urgent and heartfelt concern for the welfare of all men, women, children, and creation. An “advocate” is someone who pleads the cause of another. As people of faith, we are called to plead the cause of those who are bruised by the injustices of life. The work is enormous and thankfully, the laborers are faithful. I would love to hear from you about what you and your congregation are already doing to advocate for the least, the last and the lost. I would like to share news of your work with others who may be inspired to follow your lead. I would also like to visit with you in whatever capacity would be helpful to you. Please be in touch and in prayer as together, we seek to be doers of the Word.
If you are not already subscribed to the weekly electronic news bulletin from the Washington Office of the Presbyterian Church, I would encourage you to sign up. Visit www.pcusa.org/washington to learn more. Highlights in this week’s issue include registration materials for “Calming the Storm: Middle East Peacemaking in a Turbulent Time,” a Christian Peacemaking Conference in Washington DC to be held April 20-22 and an invitation to send a message to your members of Congress pleading that the final Budget Resolution include the highest possible domestic discretionary funding.
Yours,
Brooke Newell
