The Stony Point Conference Center is embarking on a transitional time, looking to a new and hopeful future. After providing exquisite hospitality as its director for more than a decade, the Rev. William Pindar will be stepping aside. Bill will remain in the office until June 30, 2008.
At a meeting of the General Assembly Council held in mid-February, the green light was given to the Center to continue to pursue its detailed plan for achieving financial stability. Stony Point Board Chair Gary Batty presented a balanced budget to the GAC, and indicated that he was feeling optimistic about the future. Pindar joined Batty in his optimism about the future of the center, saying to the GAC, “It is with a heart full of hope in the future and memories full of joy and accomplishment that I, at my own initiative, announce my decision to step aside as director of Stony Point Center and conclude eleven years of employment with the Center.”
Groups that have used the Center have been treated to wonderful meals, have seen the addition of a new worship center, the establishment of a Labyrinth on the grounds, the completion of the award-winning renovation of the Gilmore-Sloan House, along with small but important changes to the facility such as wireless internet access throughout the center, providing a generous welcome to all. People who have worked with Pindar planning events have appreciated his creativity, his spiritual energy and commitment to hospitality. The Center has always taken the work of social justice seriously, as it has tried to be a reflection of Christ’s love for all people and the earth.
A transitional director is being sought by the General Assembly Council, while two leaders from the Board of Directors have volunteered to handle operations without seeking remuneration.
In speaking with the GAC’s Stewardship & Mission Support and the Spirituality & Discipleship committees in February, Pindar quoted comedian Gracie Allen who said to her husband, George Burns, “Never put a period where God has placed a comma.” Bill noted that this period in the life and mission of Stony Point is transitional in nature, and that the remarkable service the Center has provided to many guests and groups will continue as a new vision unfolds.”
